There are headlines about its staggering $73 billion debt to U.S. banks, images of students shutting down the island’s universities to protest the austerity measures and tuition hikes. Freedom fighter Oscar López Rivera was honored at this year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City, and a controversial referendum was just held on Puerto Rico’s status.
