Come to our Monthly Community Open Mic!

We invite you to join us for some local talent and community building! Come express yourself. Share your ideas. Sing, Dance, engage in Spoken Word. Bring your talents!

Last month the NYC City Council approved the East Harlem Rezoning Proposal. This will affect everyone in East Harlem including us since this is where our Center is located. Rezoning is just the first step in the disappearance of affordable housing, displacement, and eventually gentrification. Our communities have seen enough of these racist rezoning policies and the attempts through the centuries by means of colonization, capitalism, and neo-imperialism to destabilize and displace us. We say no more! From Puerto Rico to Palestine we are taking back what is ours!

For centuries the ruling class has tried to silence the voice of oppressed people, but we know that will never succeed. Liberation Mic is a time to project our unity and our unbreakable connection to previous generations of struggle. Every month is an an opportunity to take it back and every day is a fresh start for a revolutionary beginning!

Liberation Mic is a place of individual creativity and collective empowerment. Being the artists and creatives that we are, we are always looking to mix it up and bring our space to higher levels. So this month, we're doing something *NEW* Liberation mic will include a StorySlam! Stories help us to build, to move beyond the superficial, to find our commonalities and connect our narratives. What's even better, everyone has a story to tell. All the deets are below! Tell your friends, tell your family. We hope to see you there!

StorySlam Deets

Stories are solicited from audience members. About 10 stories will be selected during the Story Slam. Anyone can submit their story idea, and tell a story without notes for up to 5 minutes. We encourage as many people as possible to put their stories into the hat to be selected. Everyone who is tells their story will also be put in the raffle to receive an appreciation gift!

The theme for Liberation Mic's Story Slam is PUSHED: Prepare a 5-minute story about being pushed around, over the edge, out of the plane, into the marriage, out of the job, under the bus, through the fire or towards the light. Stories of being cajoled, encouraged, nudged, pressed upon, catapulted, or fighting back against injustice are encouraged!
