On August 4, President Maduro of Venezuela survived an assassination attempt during a military parade in Caracas. The attack has been linked to the Venezuelan far right and the right wing Colombian government, and there is no doubt that the perpetrators had support from the US government. The assassination attempt follows months of escalating hostility towards the Bolivarian revolutionary government, with officials in the Trump administration publicly calling for a coup. The Western media continues to publish lies on the political and economic crises within Venezuela and has consistently demonized the democratically-elected Maduro and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela.

This is the typical playbook of a US-backed counterrevolution, something that has been re-enacted across Latin American countless times in the past century. In this time of intense political struggle between the nation's wealthy elite, backed by the US and its regional allies, and the masses of poor and working class Venezuelans, we must go beyond the propaganda.
