Liberation Flicks presents: Union Maids (1976)
Union Maids (1976) tells the story of three women union organizers who resisted work-based injustices at the height of the Great Depression. As they learned to fight the boss, they also learned how to confront the sexism and racism they found in the labor movement and in society at large. They learned firsthand how multinational working class unity is the only way to win concessions from the capitalist class.
The struggles presented in the film have not disappeared but have accelerated thanks to the lull in militant union activity and an international situation that favors global capitalism. Decades after the Great Depression, capitalism has failed to solve the most pressing issues facing the working class, from wage theft to workplace harassment. Real wages have dropped as the cost of living skyrockets. The capitalist class has been all too eager to chip away at the gains made by organized working people over the past century.
Union Maids and Damayan can teach us a powerful lesson: when we are organized, we win! An injury to one is an injury to all!
Light refreshments will be served. Donations are gladly accepted.
