Liberation Flicks presents: The Hand That Feeds
Please join us Friday, November 9th for a screening of The Hand that Feeds, a documentary about the successful 2012 occupation of an Upper East Side bakery. Workers, many of them undocumented immigrants, risked their livelihoods to stand up for a living wage, safe working conditions and a dignified workplace. The successful campaign was in part possible thanks to the organizing work of the Laundry Workers Center, an NYC-based labor group that initially sought to organize laundromat workers. The organization expanded to include restaurant and warehouse workers because they faced some of the same exploitative conditions faced by laundromat workers and could offer their skills to a wider labor pool.
After the film, we will have a panel discussion with some of the lead organizers involved with the Laundry Workers Center, whose work continues to this day. They will speak to the challenges and possibilities of organizing low-wage, primarily immigrant labor in a political environment that is increasingly racist, xenophobic and anti-labor. In spite of these challenges, the LWC continues to organize laundromat and restaurant workers right here in East Harlem, winning better conditions and contracts.
Light refreshments will be served. Donations to support the ongoing work of the Justice Center en el Barrio are greatly appreciate.
An injury to one is an injury to all!
