Amid growing threats from ICE (The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a federal law enforcement agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) nationwide, including the recent raid at a food processing plant in Mississippi, the Party for Socialism and Liberation and The Democratic Socialists of America are coming together to raise our voices in solidarity with all immigrants. We would also like to bring attention to the fact that ICE has been working within the Quad-Cities for years. According to https://trac.syr.edu/ a total of 126 ICE detainees were transferred through Rock Island County Jail in the year 2015. There is no reason to believe that this number has decreased. This cooperation with ICE has happened under the watch of the sheriff of Rock Island, Gerry Bustos--a democrat. We cannot count on The Democratic Party or the Republican Party to represent our interests. We don’t need to wait for an election cycle to raise our voices and to enact change.

We would like to call on the community to come together to call for Rock Island Sheriff Gerry Bustos to resign for his cooperation with ICE; We demand that the jail in Rock Island, and jails everywhere release all detained immigrants; We demand full rights for all immigrants; We demand an end to racist police practices and mass incarceration; we call for the abolishment of ICE; We demand an open border, as well as putting an end to all deportations.

Despite how small you may think the transfer numbers may be, our so called representatives, our so called neighbors, are still essential cogs in the machine of white supremacy. Together we have the power to abolish ICE!

We invite everyone to meet on the sidewalks of Schwiebert Park in Rock Island at 12 pm on Saturday, September 7th. Bring signs of solidarity. We will walk from the park, through downtown Rock Island, to the Rock Island County Jail to list our demands. Join us, invite your neighbors!
