Join us for a night of feminist, socialist discussion on the Housing Issue under capitalism.

We are living in a huge housing crisis: In 2017, 553,742 people lived without housing per night. In 2016, 2.3 million eviction notices were filed. Meanwhile the second quarter of 2018 - the GDP of the United States was $5,100,626 million.

Housing is one of the most fundamental basic necessities, yet here, in the United States - the richest country in the world - hundreds of thousands of people are denied this necessity every day.

Breaking the Chains: A Socialist Perspective on Women’s Liberation discusses the issue of housing under capitalism. We will discuss women fighters like Willana Burroughs, a housing activist during the depression era. We’ll look at why housing insecurity and homelessness are women’s issues. Moreover, we’ll discuss how we continue to fight back against the capitalist system - the system that can both create obscene amounts of wealth, but deny the majority of people the right to live.

Melina Rodriguez, a featured writer in this issue of Breaking the Chains, will lead a discussion on oppression faced by immigrants as a consequence of imperialism, and often how immigrants are forced to pay more than one third of their incomes, only to live in dangerous living conditions.

We will also be discussing our statewide initiative to repeal the 1995 Costa Hawkins Rental Act, which essentially puts limits on rent control - repealing this would be a huge victory for renters all across California.
