This study session is inspired by the anniversary of Mexican Independence from Spanish rule on September 16th.

We find that in these times it is crucial that we gain an understanding of recent events in Mexican politics, their historical context, and their reflection in the American Empire's domestic and foreign policies.

The recent election of AMLO signals that the Mexican people want change and presents them with the historic opportunity to achieve that change. There will be significant obstacles in the form of an entrenched and historically empowered capitalist class - which AMLO derides as "la mafia del poder" or "the mafia of power". The neoliberal project in Mexico has done everything in its power to destroy workers rights and gobble up Mexico's natural resources and land, leaving the Mexican people in a precarious state. The Mexican people have stood up and demanded change! It is our hope that this recent election signals a growing class-consciousness and will be the start of real, positive change.
