New Mexico’s 30-day legislative session started on Tuesday.
In a state that regularly ranks near the top of the country in child hunger, unemployment, overall poverty, income inequality, the gender wage gap, high school and college dropout rates, exploitation by predatory lenders, and other national poverty indicators, many people’s attention will be fixed on what happens during this year’s legislative session.
The New Mexican state budget depends heavily on capitalist extraction industries. With global oil prices plummeting from overproduction and the state budget shrinking as a result, working people are waiting to see where the ruling class decides to hit them with austerity. Already on the chopping block are proposed raises for primary school teachers.
In addition, the right-wing is rallying to push through bills that would allow business owners to discriminate against LGBTQ people, eliminate immigrants’ right to get driver’s licenses, turn New Mexico into the 26th “Right to Work” state, expand three-strikes sentencing and other pro-incarceration overhauls.
Join the PSL to discuss the significance of this session and the battles ahead.
