ABQ Forum: Debates, right v ultra-right | Gary Johnson, good or bad?
Join the PSL this Friday for a full socialist analysis of the first presidential and vice-presidential debates.
Last week, Clinton and Trump, two of the wealthiest and most hated people in the country clashed in a presidential debate. On Tuesday’s Vice Presidential debate, Tim Kaine and Mike Pence went head to head.
The debates, like the election process in general, is mostly vapid and empty. Outside the jabbing at each other, the message of both campaigns is fundamentally rightwing. Both campaigns are now openly pledging to widen the war in Syria. Both campaigns are engaged in serious Russia-bashing, making it appear that Russia is a threat the United States. Both agreed to the idea of a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea!
Outside of the war-mongering of the two parties, issues of homelessness, mental health issues, the environment, wages, the war budget, tax advantages given to the corporate rich, and so many other issues were just brushed aside or not mentioned at all.
Facing a choice between two hated politicians, countless people are looking for an alternative and are considering third-party candidates. The most popular is the Liberatarian Party’s Gary Johnson. But does the right-wing campaign of Gary Johnson and Libertarian ideology really represent something good for workers’ and our families?
